The Prophetic Tradition (Hadith) is one of the major primary sources of Islam, second only to the Qur'an in significance. Hadith traditions are at the very bedrock of Islamic Law and practice, and therefore an essential science in the sacred study of Islam.
This course introduces the student to an immense and incredibly valuable body of literature, and explores its transmission and compilation throughout history. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the rules regulating Hadith classification, and will learn to identify differences between the various categories of Hadith.
Ultimately, this is a course that will allow greater appreciation for the brilliance of Prophetic messaging, the development of Islam traditions, and the firm foundations upon which Islamic rites rest.
